Tire Suggestions 850

Ryan--I have a 97R wagon and had to go to Toyo's Proxes to find an all-season radial that would fit. There are dozens of high performance summer tires to choose from in the specified 205-45-17 size I had to use, but very few all-season. I came very close to buying Michelin's Hydroedge from Costco because it had an 80,000 mile warranty on it, was top rated for wet weather, and was incredibly quiet. Unfortunately for me, it did not come in a 45 spec. 50 was the lowest. I could have bought 16-inch rims and put them on, but that was another four to five hundred. In the end I settled for the Proxes. Costco had the Michelin Hydroedges on sale, $60 off or some such figure. Had they made it in a 45 I would be driving on them instead of the Proxes. Incidentally, I was a big Les Schwab fan until it came to buying my Proxes. They wanted something like 150-160 apiece plus mounting and balancing. They had them priced on sale for $132 but I was a day late getting there and no way were they going to let me have them for the sale price. I went to another dealer--AmericaTire, I think--and paid $110 each. Same price as TireRack or one of the other sites. Cheaper, because the web site dealers all wanted an additional ten apiece for shipping. I figured out what I wanted to pay for the Proxes and then phoned around and asked if they were interested, and the first one I phoned said yes. It's not written in stone that you have to accept a dealer's price on tires. Come up with your own figure. Dick
