Black stuff on front wheels S60 2001

I have heard some comments about messy brake pads. I've been driving Volvos
with disk brakes since 1970 and NEVER seen anything like what I am getting on
my S60 T5's front wheels. This stuff is more like soot from an over-rich
exhaust than anything else - putting a little air in the tires caused me to
have to go back home and scrub my hands. What IS this mess??!??
