Engine splash shield and angle gear S60 2002

I recently (3 months ago) purchased a 2002 S 60 and took to a dealer for an oil change a few days ago. The mechanic proceeded to an unrequested inspection of the car and reported , among other things, that the car was missing the engine splash shield and that the angle gear was leaking oil. I am a novice at these things but someone told me that for the s60 the splash shield is an add on. Is this right? Also, is it common for the angle gear to leak ? I have seen no oil on the gararge floor and the mechanic did not have to top up the oil although I have driven the car for at least 4000 miles.
