ABS Pump Motor Replacement S70

My 98 S70 ABS and Trac light turned on solid. At first the mechanic thought it was the board, but when he checked it he said that it was the ABS Pump motor because the code will not clear. This is a $2K plus part with installation. He advised me that this problem is rare. He also said the car was safe if I didn't fix it.

So my question, is this true or should I replace the motor. Also, does any one know why this happened. I have 118K miles on my car.
