I'd suggest the AAA "Plus" road service with 100 miles of towing and a cell phone. Also, find a nearby car rental place.
The two longest periods my car was off the road were following accidents, the dependabilty/ reliability don't have anything to do with that. Otherwise -- it was a day or two here, a day or two there. Seized brake calipers, that kinda thing. Having a back-up car is a good thing. We've had three cars down at once, one with an accident and two with mechanical problems. I actually found the repair rate going down after 100,000 although it might be that I am less fussy than I was when the car was covered by a warranty.
Mine still doesn't use oil, and still has the original clutch, although it's getting kinda funky.
