850 wont start 850 1991

I have a 94 850 non turbo wagon. 129K on the clock when I bought it, odometer doesn't work. I've had it about 9 months. Normally runs like a clock. About 1 month ago I started it, it ran for a second or two and shut off. Cranked over but didn't attempt to start. Towed to my regular mechanic(not a volvo guy). He gave it a badly needed tuneup and I was on my way. No problems for last month. Now it's dead again. Same story, started and died right away. Cranks over but doesn't try to start. Has spark according to my spark checker. Starting fluid doesn't get any reaction. Any clues? I don't want to spring for another tow.
