The good thing is that it has an on board scan tool to check the trouble codes. The weak spot is the tranny, if the fluid smells burned, walk away.
You will have to clean the PCV and do regular maintenance, along with flushing the tranny every 25,000 miles. The light bulbs in the instrument panel will fail about now, but it is an easy fix. The trunk struts will probably need replacing, but that is fairly simple. In fact, all fixes except the rear main seal are easy fixes.
You can over maintain this car. It is fun to work on.
Oh, if the AC doesn't work, it is probably the evaporator leaking. Volvo created the evaporator first, then built the dash around it. It takes about 10 to 12 hours for an experianced mechanic to replace the evaporator. Or, you can be like me and add a can of r134a every month or so. And carry an extra can next to the spare tire.
I still like mine, eventhough the alternator diode board failed last month - unusual.
