wiring trailer lights S60 2001

I'll be getting a hitch on my S60 in the next few weeks. While in the future I will need a setup with wiring for a "real" trailer with electric brakes and all that, for now I will be towing a simple utility trailer with a conventional 3-wire plus ground setup.

For my Corolla, I bought an aftermarket kit with the turn signal/brake light converter incorporated into the vehicle end of the plug assembly. Easy to install (tapped into the turn signal, brake light, and tail light wires, and provided a ground connection), and it never gave a moment's trouble.

My question is: can I use the same setup with the Volvo, or do I absolutely need the OEM-supplied trailer wiring kit?

Advice would be appreciated.
