Fixing Mode 'W' 850 1993

If the car is shifting OK, you may just have a corroded or dirty switch.

Try "rowing" the shifter lever from Park to 1st gear about 50 times or so, moderate speed (engine off, of course !!). It may still flash the next time you drive, but frequently for me, the second time you drive it, the flashing stops. Seems like it takes at least one "running" for a cleanup rowing to have an effect on the flashing.

If it ever gets to the place where it's actually starting out in 2nd gear (Winter mode), that's more serious. You can't let that go on for too long, you'll burn up the tranny. Same rowing solution often seems to work in both my 854 and my 964. It's been doing it intermittently in both cars for three years, and I haven't replaced a PNP switch yet (thank God !).
