Advice on picking up V70 V70-XC70 1998

We are expanding our search for a Volvo wagon to the V70. I have heard that the 1998 was one of the better years, and to avoid the '99 year due to problems with the drive-by-wire system. The early years of the model change 2001+ were also problematic & pose more than what we want to put into the car.

Is the '98 V70 a decent car mechanically, and is the plain V70 more reliable than the GT model? This car will be for my older son who plans on adding a 3rd child in the next year or so and is looking to upgrade from his 172K 1993 240 wagon.

Thanks for your help.
