Bilstein TC struts V70-XC70 1998

OK, I got my new Bilstein TCs, spring seats and strut mounts, ready to put them on tomorrow in my first attempt at changing my own struts. I'm using the instructions on matthewsvolsite.com On the new struts, I assume I'm supposed to remove the little wire brace that runs from the cylinder and hooks around the top of the piston. What is that for, is is a shipping brace of some kind? Does it stay or does it go?
