Continously Running Fan 850 1994

A few mornings ago I went into the garage to get my 85o wagon and head to work. As I approached the car I noticed a humming sound coming from the engine compartment (and I didnt' have a good feeling). I opened the hood and determined the sound was coming from near the battery. When I attempted the start the engine, the dreaded "er" followed by the worse "click." I disconnected the battery and took alternate transportation to work. Since then I've charged the battery on trickle and this evening reconnected the battery leads. Immediately the humming sound returned, with vigor since the battery was fully charged. I disconnected the battery leads again and bowed my head.

If anyone has a suggested cause and cure I'd sure appreciate some guidance.

Thanks all, and keep pedalling.
