Windshield molding replacement S70 1998

I have a '98 S70 and when a paint/body shop painted the car, they cut into the retainer portion of the molding. They replaced the molding with a new one, but since they had cut into the retainer, the molding won't 'latch' into it and stay secure. Volvo sells retainer and molding separately (not listed as part of windshield) and I want to know if the retainer can be replaced without taking out the windshield...then I can snap the outer molding strip securely (I hope) into it...any experience replacing either piece or gluing top molding onto the retainer...? thx for any help....
