is this what starter failure feels like? 850 1996

When I turn the key on my 145k mile 850 i occasionally have a hard time starting, like 4-5 tries. Other times no problems at all. When it fails to start i get a noise that isn't a crank, nor a click. It's a sustained noise that I can't describe. I suspect it's the sound of the starter turning but not engaging. Not knowing anything about starters, I found a picture of one online and saw a gear on a rod which is recessesd in the housing... does that emerge from the housing before the motor spins and engage the flywheel or am I just making stuff up? Is there anything else that can explain my failure to crank every now and then?

Thoughts are appreciated...

Andrew
