AIR pump V70-XC70

I have a check engine light on. I have had it re-set, but it lights up almost immediately, so I think it's time to take care of the problem. The code indicates that I need a new AIR pump. I believe it is located somewhere under the battery. I am wondering a couple things:
--It looks to be a relatively easy do-it-yourself job; is it?
--What IS an AIR pump? The car seems to run well with an apparently defective one. Will a new one help performance or efficiency? Can I expect better mileage?
--It is a relatively expensive part (I am getting prices at around $300.00). Is this a part that often fails (i.e., should I buy a new one, or should I find a used one at a salvage yard)?

Thanks
