hard to start white smoke/ temp circuit failure S70 1998

Hello, I just purchased a 98 S70 turbo with 109k miles on it. I have a check engine light on, so I went to my local autozone and had it scanned. It came up with 1 code, coolant circuit failure. would that be the coolant temp sensor or the coolant switch? Also, sometimes it is hard to start, I have to pump the gas and it will then start but, when it does their is a puff of white smoke out of the tail pipe. It doesn't seem to smoke any other time. Would the coolant sensor or switch have anything to with the hard start issue? I have checked the cap, rotor and plugs and they all look like they need to be replaced. there was no oil on the plugs.

Thanks!
Dennis
