dash speaker replacements - any experiences out there, other than factory ones? 850 1994

while wasting my time on my odo fix, i noted that both dash speakers on my 94 850 turbo were badly cracked. i think my car has the then-premium sound system in it. i found new replacement ones for $25 each but wondered if anyone had successfully replaced these units with aftermarket speakers that would improve the overall sound quality while retaining the original grilles. the rest of the system right now is stock but i anticipate installing a panasonic cd player/radio soon. havent popped out the door speakers yet but figure they are pretty routine, and the rear ones with the spacer mounting appear to be pretty standard issue 6x9s, and should present no real problem. (i hope!!!!)

anyone out there who has upgraded? are the original ones real tweeters or full range speakers? did you trim the originals out of the little plastic bracket or fabricate a different means of fastening them down?
