door check installation...... 850

My brother is looking at a '97 850 GLT(?) wagon(5 speed) with minimal miles(100k), but the one issue with the car is that the driver's side door check needs to be replaced. I know when the door check was replaced on my parent's 850 years ago at the local Volvo indie mechanic it cost a fortune(in labour). How does one go about replacing a door stop without being gouged at the dealership? Thanks :)
