Training Day -- Transmission V70-XC70 2002

In response to a seemingly minor complain about abrupt downshifts, we recently had the entire trans replaced (under warranty) on our 02 V70 T5. Ever since, we've noticed at least a 4 mpg drop in fuel economy for "highway" driving and more than 4 mpg worse in "city" driving. Could this be caused by how the new transmission was "trained" to make shift points compared to the original, or is there some other explanation someone might offer?

As to the original "training," we picked the V70 up in Gothenburg and drove to Italy -- which included mostly high-speed autobahn travel. In contrast, the car is now used around town a lot, and so the new trans experienced much more stop and go and low speed operation.

If it is shift point training, is there a way to reset & start over?
