odd a/c problem 850 1996

Within the past year I've had the evaporator and condenser replaced. It blows very cold most of the time. However, (and I haven't figured out if there is a pattern) it will sometimes stop (turn off?) and start to blow warm air. When it's blowing warm and i actually turn the a/c off, you hear a click and the idle change (which would tell me that the compressor was running while it was blowing warm air). If i wait maybe 10 minutes and turn it back on it will blow cold air again. Also, I don't have automatic climate control. Any idea? $2000 into the system, it should work, and I don't want to go pay the $250 flat rate fee to have it diagnosed.

Thanks in advance.
Bill
