emissions 'J hose' replaced V70-XC70 1998

My wife's 1998 V70 with 127,000 miles.

Both the "Service" & "Check Engine" lights were on, so off it went to our
indy mechnanic for the check-up and re-sets.

Results- well the check engine light was on as a result of a failing "J hose" of the emissions system, replaced and light reset for a nominal fee of $149.

So what is this hose, what does it do, is it rubber or plastic,
why/how would it fail and need to be replaced?

I just like to know what I am getting for my money and it was running & driving fine, but I know it may not have passed inpection and the mileage down...

I thank you folks for your input/response!

Mike
