Fault Code - Fuel Trim Bank 1: System too Rich 850

I've got a 96 850 with OBD-II diagnostics and the check engine light is on. I hooked it up to my brother's VAG COM software and it says the following:

Mode 3 Emission Related
Address 17 1 fault
P0172 Fuel Trim: Bank 1: System too rich

Does anybody know why this might occur? I've also noted a couple times that during very heavy acceleration (foot on the floor) I can smell a sulfur/rotten egg odor.

I've been a 240 owner for a long time and don't know much about the 850 yet. Any help you can provide would be great.

Thanks!

Pat Levy
