A/C help.... 850

Hi,

So i tried to re-charge the a/c today with r-134a. The compressor wasn't cylcing at all so i went and jumped it. It started to cycle and I proceeded to fill it up with new refrigerant. After a coupled of pumps..the can got really cold but the air coming out of the vents were not cool at all. ALso, I noticed that when the compressor is not on..the gauage would go to red but with it constantly on it barely goes to the filled level. What is going on? Is the compressor suppose to be always on. Because mine won't turn on unless I jump it. Thanks for the help.
