850glt aw42 trannie, worked fine yesterday, today I got no reverse at all. 850

Hey all,
This is for my neighbor's car, it's a 850 GLT AW42 Trannie, the trannie always worked fine. He took it to the machanic to change new drive-axle boots, and when he got back he tried to reverse it into the house, but it wouldn't engage, the rear taillamp for reverse does come on, but the car doesn't move at all, just revs and revs. I know the trannie was good because I'd drive it everynow and then, and I've been driving it abit this week. It shifts perfectly fine and smooth forwards.
What could be the problem, could it be faulty gear-shift cable not fully engaging reverse?
