Sporatic AC Cooling

2001 V70XC AC cools great, but occasionally will not cool. After a few starts of the engine on errands around town, it will start cooling again. I'm thinking it might be a short of some kind not engaging the compressor clutch, as we do not use the AUTO setting. Mechanic has replaced some sensor, but still have the problem. He wants to replace the compressor now, but I want to be certain before I shell out big bucks when it might be simpler to fix. Any clues or thoughts?
