example of local dealership nonsense 850

Often when I need a gasket or other OEM part, I go to the parts dept of the local
Volvo dealership.

Out of curiosity, I spoke with the service writer in the repairs dept and asked him how
often one ought to service the flame trap/breather system. After a pensive pause, he
replied, "Oh, I think there's a service every hundred-thousand miles or so." From this
statement, I inferred that they prefer to make their revenue from expensive seal
replacements rather than cheap, routine maintenance. Either that, or he’s new on the
job. Needless to say, this will impact my decisions in the future when it comes to
having more complicated work done. Maybe this is what you get when there is only
one dealer (acting as a sort of monopoly) within the vicinity.
