gas filler door lock 850 1996

I was about to fill my gas tank today. My gas filler door had other ideas. It would not release.
I did a google search and found a temporary fix on Volvospeed. There is a gas door filler door release pull ring near the tail light wiring in the right rear.

The door will lock when I hit the power lock button on the dash. It will not unlock. I am considering disabling the lock or doing the appropriate repair.
The Haynes Manual has no comment on this problem.

Has anyone out there properly repaired or disabled the gas filler door lock and if so, how is it done?
