Erratic Gas Gauge 850 1995

The gas gauge on my 1995 850 Turbo usually works great but there are many times that the gauge shows the tank as empty when it is far from it. There appears no pattern when this happens and when it does happen the low gas indicator comes on and the trip computer displays the miles left. Any ideas?
