High Engine Temperature Message in heavy stop/go traffic (I-5) V70-XC70 2001

In addition to poor air flow thru radiator due to obstruction outside or improper fan operation you may have poor circulation of coolant or an internally obstructed radiator or thermostat may be opening partially.

You will not get a check engine light. Overheating can become serious quickly on modern light alloy engines and I would check out the cause thoroughly. I wouldn't rely on computer generated messages for protection.

Are you losing any coolant?
