Car won't move forward or backward V70-XC70 1998

After sitting in driveway all night, four days ago in the morning, I tried to start my '98 V70 automatic...starts fine, but would not go forward or backward. Made an awful grating sound when I gave it gas, but did not budge in either direction. Have been waiting for my mechanic to get back from vacation, so I just left it there. Just now tried to get it to move. I could feel it try to move back and forward. I didn't give any gas. Brakes seem to be locked. I'd like to know what some of the probable causes might be, and whether it's ok to have towed.
Just in case it matters, I went through car wash two days before.
