keyless entry problem 850 1996

Having a problem with keyless entry on a 96 850. The hand unit works to lock the car only about once every five tries. Can anyone tell me where is on the car? Is the receiver the small box center of windshield with the red LED? When I lock the car with the key, the LED turns on for ~3 seconds and then begins flashing as usual. The batteries are new in the hand unit.
