AC ligts blink 18 times after switching on ignition 850

Can't say exactly if on the 18th light-on the lights stay lit or whether its the 19th. All i know is AC works fine and this blinking only happens once a week - normally really hot days.

I have no codes. I know some people recommend 'filling' up the refridgerant once a year - can i do this myself or should i take it to mech?
