Do I need an adapter for my CD Changer 850 1997

I just bought a '97 850 wagon. It has a CHM-S601 Alpine 6 disc changer in the back. It is missing the cartridge. I figured it was the same as my '95 850 which was factory installed (it has VOLVO on it).

The Alpine doesn't 'grab' the cartridge from the '95 and it just clicks without the cartridge in it when the key is on. It appears to be getting power. I'm seeing all this stuff about adapters needed for aftermarket changers. Are the actions of mine the result of needing this adapter, or is it just a bad changer?
