A/C cutting on and off S70 1998

If it works fine at low speeds, and the outside temp is hovering at 100F, I wonder if the center vent on the dash is "open" for extra fresh air. That would allow 100F air to mix with the AC and warm it considerably. I would close that vent when the temp gets too hot.
Those of us that live on the other end of I 35 have the opposite problem when it cools off in January!
