Ignition Immobilizer Antenna Ring Replacement Need Software Update? V70-XC70 2000

I have a 2000 V70XC SE with an intermittant no start problem. It cranks, but no start. I assume it's the antenna ring as both keys behave the same way. I went to the dealer and they said that a software update is needed when I switch the antenna ring. This doesn't seem to be right to me. The part is so small it is hard to believe there is any logic involved. I would think the logic would be stored elsewhere. I'm confused because I've seen posts on this site that state that people have replaced the antenna themselves. Does anyone know the scoop on this problem?

Thanks,
Eric
