Well our 98 S70 is the most reliable car I've ever owned. I looked for a long time to find a car with good service history and only one prior owner - I think this is the key. Regular DIY maintenance and information gleaned from the various Volvo internet information boards and 'bay 13' will help you immensely. I wouldn't buy second hand any volvo later that the '98 as those cars have had a few expensive design issues which you will find out about if you browse this board.
