Alarm system acting up

Hello all.
2001 V70. fwd ~75k miles. all factory service. My wifes car.

Lately the alarm system in this car has started to malfunction.
the system diplay will a message like:
the alarm system has been triggered or
the headlights will start to flash repeatedly after the car is locked.
Now my wife tells me that the system display reports that the alarm system needs repair. She wants the car to go to the dealer for repair but i'd just as soon disable the system if it is going to cost more that $150.
Has anyone experienced this? would you share your thoughts. I havent yet searched the forum. ill do that next.
