check engine light 850

my check engine light came on 4 days ago, i took it to volvo dealer, they checked the fault code - said it was a catalytic converter issue, said O2 sensors were ok. they could not pinpoint the source of the fault without an additional $450 worth of diagnositics. the write up guy did not know what the actual fault code was. After they cleared the fault it did not come back until today - about 24 hours after i got car back from dealer.
any ideas about what the fault is? the car seem to run fine, except the muffler seems a little noisy.
