You can read your own codes, using the two little black boxes hanging off the ECU box on the passenger side. See the 700 FAQs on this site, they explain how to do it and turn off the CEL light.
Depending on your milage, the cat may be failing. I would look for vacuum leaks, especially the elbow behind the power steering pump and under the battery support.

No dealer should quote that kind on money for diagnostics!
