Recently, I ordered a batch of 10 Mann oil filters from Groton FCP. I noticed the filters were manufactured in Argentina instead of Germany. I had a few old Mann filters (unused). I compared the "German" filter to the "Argentinean" filter. The German filter seemed heavier, and when peering inside the filter, the interior structure seemed different too. It appeared, and I am no expert, that some valve mechanism was absent from the Argentinean filter.
I know that Volvo has been using Mann filters since the early 60s on its models. I also believe one of the features of the Mann filter, is that it possesses a valve that either allows oil to by-pass the filter if it becomes clogged, or is designed to "trap" oil so when you start the engine, there is almost immediate oil pressure.
I suspect that Mann is just responding to globalization by moving production to Argentina. Germany has one of the highest wage scales in Europe, if not the world. Also, the Euro has soared in value in comparison to the dollar, putting its filters at a price disadvantage to other manufacturers.
My concerns/questions are:
1) Has the quality of the Mann filter been reduced?
2) If it has been reduced, can any one recommend a alternative filter?
3) Does Volvo still use Mann as an OEM supplier of its oil filters?
4) Presently, Mann air/cabin filters are made in Germany. Does anybody
know if the production of those filters will be shifted to
Argentina?
5) This is more a comment than question. We all want to maintain our
Volvos. Using quality parts goes a long way in achieving that goal.
I purposely avoid using cheap parts, because in the long run they are
not the bargain they appear to be.
