CV Halfshaft Axle Replacement - Is shaft nut fixture required? S70 1998

I have searched back to April '05 with no luck, so I ask.
For loosening of the shaft nut, my manual calls for the use of a counterhold fixture after the wheel has been removed. Is there some important reason to do it this way? Because for other cars, I have loosened the shaft nut with the wheel on, with the car still on the ground. The fixture looks expensive, and is it really necessary?
Also, for the passenger side halfshaft, are there any gearbox seals which should be replaced? 1998 S70 T5, manual transmission.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
