odometer 850

I did mine two nights ago in 40F weather. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it depends on your mechanical aptitude. The parts are high priced at 50 dollars for the two plastic gears. I bought both of them, because my karma sucks.

Two things not mentioned on the writeup at:

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/odometer_fix.php

Since it's winter, run your heater with the vents open to warm them up. It softens the plastic and makes them easier to pull out.

To get the vents out, rotate them downward (pointing at the ground) and keep pushing until one side gives way. I thought I was going to break mine, but they are more resilient than I had guessed.

Once you have all the screws out to raise half of the dash cap, pull outward slightly. The dash cap sits under a plastic rail up by the windshield.

To get enough room to pop out the odometer cluster, you have to push up the dash cap and push it inward with your left hand to deform and arch it up in the air.

Reinstalling the dash cap, you need to remember that plastic rail at the windshield. Going from right to left, make sure to get the padded dash cap aligned back in there, otherwise you'll hear that familiar Volvo sound of plastic shattering.. (don't ask how I know..)

I forgot to plug in the odometer motor when I did it, so I got to pull it all apart a second time. The second time took me 15 minutes start to finish.

Go slow. Everything is straightforward.
