Transmission locking and slipping 850 1996

I just installed a new driver's side drive shaft and now smell a oily smell in the heater when driving at slower speeds around town. The worst is that there are times when I can't get it to go from park to reverse. I can put it in the selector but no shifting occurs. If I rev the motor it will grab and jerk backwards. If I shift into drive right after that, there is a loud whirring noise in the tranny as I drive forward. If I put it in park and then try it again, it might be just fine, or do it again. There is no consistency to this at all. I am getting the oily smell consistently though. Don't know if it is leaking from the tranny or what. I just can't put the installed drive shaft and the oily smell together and pin in on anything.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
