checking tranny fluid 850 1995

Yeah there's only about 3 quarts of fluid in the tranny sump, most of the fluid is actually in the torque converter, so you would have to check it while the engine is running to get the proper level. There's also no filter in the tranny at all. Most shops recommend adding a Magnefine inline filter to the return line and running synthetic or synthetic blend tranny fluid.
Changing the tranny fluid every 30-50k miles is a good practice as well.
