Driving V70R Without Driveshaft V70-XC70

I have a recurring issue with my 1998 AWD Volvo V70R. Volvo used a driveshaft (propeller shaft) which uses CV-joints at each end of the drive shaft instead of U-joints. The front CV rubber boot is near the catalytic converter which over time (2 to 3 years) deteriorates the rubber boot causing the grease to spin out of the CV joint. My third replacement driveshaft just failed at 125,000 miles and this means a fourth expenditure of $980 (parts only) to have the drive shaft replaced by Volvo.

I have seen replacement CV-joints which can be put on the existing driveshaft with proper tools for $240, but it will still fail again. I am in need of a permanent solution to make up for Volvo’s poor engineering. Is there any other Volvo driveshaft using U-joints that I could substitute to solve this continuing issue? Or, if I just removed the drive shaft and let the car function as a front wheel drive are there any concerns I need to be aware of?

Thanks,

Steve Moczary
