Can someone tell me why...

so many people chase after the elusive manual transmission?
Why is manual transmission in an 850 or 240 that big of a deal?
The auto transmissions are very reliable (and you can eat, drink, smoke, shift, give hand signals to the guy that cut you off, and steer!)

I keep reading threads where that is the reason for an extended, unsuccessful search. When I look for a used car, I also have a list (make, model, color, interior, engine, sunroof or not, transmission type, etc.), but I don't expect to get all of my criteria filled. Instead, if I see a good shape car with records, I might buy it even it doesn't have everything I want.
