Can someone tell me why...

If you had a turbo with an automatic it would make sense to you. I dislike the car down shifting when the boost kicks in, but with the auto it is hard not to downshift.
The 850s did not have very reliable automatics. The fluid will cook and turn black, the electronics weren't very good and tended to cause more problems. At least those who were able to shift for themselves didn't have those problems. Replacing the clutch at 200K is expensive...
