850 Starter replacement 850 1995

Greetings:

I've run into a brick wall: Following the Haynes service manual (my first apparent mistake), I attempted to remove and replace my starter. Of course, Haynes makes it look like all you have to do is reach down, undo some bolts, and the starter simply lifts out. What they fail to mention is that the starter IS UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD!!! AAAARRGGHHH!!!

Soooo, I called the local Volvo dealer and spoke with a service advisor. (Of course, they're better equipped to take your money, and not so much give technical advice.) Anyway, I asked the guy if there was any way to remove the starter without dealing with the intake manifold. He sai, "No way. That's why we charge 7 hours labor for a starter job."

However, upon further examining the precocious position of the starter, I am inclined to disagree. It seems to me that you could simply remove the cooling fan/shroud, etc., and then you would have enough clearance to get to the starter and remove it from the engine compartment.

Does anyone agree with this, or have any other suggestions?
