What's with my windshield wipers? SAFETY PROBLEM! 850 1994

This happened to me on a trip once, in the Smoky Mts. I stopped by the side of the road, and took the arm off. Having no better solution and wanting to move on, I wrapped a little bit of 600 grit waterproof aluminum oxide paper around the splined shaft end to form a shim, then put the arm back on. The friction was evidently enough to keep the arm in place once I tightened down the nut. I figured this would fail soon and planned to replace the arm once it did, but it has been about 6 years now.
