Brake + ABS (+ Check Engine) Warning Lights - Diagnosis? S70

Hi there.

I have a 2000 S70 GLT with automatic transmission, about 65,000 miles and experienced a problem this afternoon.

As I was driving on the highway at 60 mph with cruise control, the Brake and ABS warning lights came on simultaneously. The appearance of these 2 warning lights coincided with the shut-down of cruise control, the speedometer dropping to 0 mph (even though the car remained powered and traveling at 60 mph), the trip odometer/odometer changing to dashes ('--'), and upon accelerating the engine sounded as if it was trying to up-shift to the next highest gear while driving at too slow a speed (as one might expect/experience when driving a manual-transmission vehicle...but my car is an automatic transmission). The warning lights remained illuminated for about 30 seconds. After the warning lights turned-off, the odometers returned to normal but the speedometer remained at 0, the cruise control remained non-functional and acceleration felt/sounded labored/strained as described above.

After about 1-2 minutes, the 2 warning lights illuminated again. At this point, I was looking for a safe place to pull over and stop. Once I stopped, I checked the Owner's Manual (which was useless for such a combination of warning lights). I did check the Brake Fluid and it was at the recommended level.

I called my local Volvo dealer to see if one of their Techs could tell me if it would be safe to drive home (4 miles from where I had stopped). They told me that unless the Check Engine light came on, it would be ok to drive without damaging the engine/transmission. Satisfied, I started the car (after it was sitting/off for 10 minutes) and the 2 warning lights illuminated again AND the Check Engine light illuminated (coincidence?! ;^) ). So, I turned the engine off and opted for a tow (yep...Volvo Roadside Assistance).

Have you experienced this combination of symptoms? If so, I'd appreciate your feedback/insight about what the problem or problems may be (so I can go in to the dealer/mechanic somewhat informed).
